THE VOLUNTEER PROJECT IN ASIA - CAMBODIA

Discover an authentic international volunteering experience, deeply rooted in the local Cambodian community. You will be able to make a concrete contribution to improving the living conditions of rural families in Siem Reap province, taking part in the construction of safe, sustainable housing and supporting educational programmes for children and teenagers.

Discover an authentic international volunteering experience, carried out in partnership with a local organisation that has been active in the area for years and is deeply rooted in the Cambodian community. The project takes place in the province of Siem Reap, an area symbolic of Khmer culture, where ancient temples, spiritual traditions and rural life still coexist today.

Taking part in this project means coming into direct contact with Cambodian culture, made up of respect and a strong sense of community. You will live in close contact with the local population, sharing their rhythms, habits and values, in a setting where hospitality and smiles are an integral part of everyday life.

In this setting, the project contributes to the development of rural communities through educational, social and infrastructural initiatives, offering lasting support.

An experience that combines impact with personal growth, allowing you to discover an authentic culture and leave a positive mark.
As a volunteer, you will be able to take part in programmes in the following areas:

Construction

You will have the chance to build safe, hygienic and durable homes for the families most in need

Houses are built over four days, while on the fifth day a blessing ceremony is held with the local community. The construction materials are prepared at the warehouse by local workers, while assembly takes place directly in the villages, thanks to the collaboration between volunteers and local builders.

Teaching

You will be able to contribute to activities at the community school, supporting classes through English lessons and computer courses. These activities take place from Monday to Thursday, while Friday is dedicated to hygiene and health lessons and to vocational guidance, to help young people discover their own abilities and potential.

The aim is to reach as many children and teenagers as possible from vulnerable backgrounds, ensuring free and inclusive access.

LOCATION

The project is located in the province of Siem Reap, in northern Cambodia.
The town is well known for its proximity to the famous Angkor Wat temple complex, but just a few kilometres from the centre lie rural villages where many families still live in precarious housing conditions.

Volunteers stay in Siem Reap, from where they travel every day to the surrounding villages (around 1 hour away) to take part in construction activities or to support the education centre.

ARRIVAL AND TRAINING

You will arrive at Bangkok International Airport, from where you will take a short one-hour flight to Siem Reap International Airport.

On arrival at the airport, volunteers are welcomed by local staff, who will arrange transfer to the guest house.

A meeting will then be held to present the project, with a safety briefing and an introduction to working protocols and local culture. The training is simple and suitable for everyone: no previous experience is necessary.

BOARD AND LODGING

Volunteers are hosted in a guest house located in Siem Reap, in a quiet and easily accessible area. The atmosphere is welcoming and friendly, ideal for meeting other volunteers from all over the world.

Breakfast is included, while lunch and dinner are also available at the guest house or in many affordable local restaurants.

A TYPICAL DAY

The routine may vary depending on the project (construction or education centre), but generally follows this structure:

  • 07:30 | Breakfast at the guest house
  • 08:00 | Departure for the project, with transport included
  • 09:00 – 12:00 | Construction activities
  • 12:00 – 13:00 | Return to Siem Reap and lunch break
  • 13:00 – 15:00 | Activities at the education centre
  • 15:00 – 16:00 | Return to Siem Reap to the guest house
  • Afternoon/evening – Free time, relax, dinner with other volunteers

REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE

Be at least 18 years old and have a good knowledge of English.

MINIMUM LENGTH OF STAY

The minimum length of stay is 2 weeks. Volunteers can leave at any time during the year and are free to decide whether to stay on the project for a longer period. The advice of the YearOut staff is to stay on the project for a period of 4 weeks, to make the volunteers’ intervention useful both for the community and for themselves.

DONATION

The donation varies based on the number of weeks of stay and the project chosen.

Your donation includes: breakfast, lodging, transport costs to/from the airport, local transport for the project during the volunteering period, 24-hour staff assistance, and funding for the materials needed for activities.

FREE TIME

Siem Reap offers plenty of activities for free time:

  • visiting the temples of Angkor Wat
  • cycling or tuk-tuk excursions through rural villages
  • local markets and street food
  • cultural workshops (cooking)
  • an excursion to Kulen Mountain
  • a visit to the floating villages

Volunteers are free to organise their own time, always with the support of the local staff.
