Rimaniamo in Kenya, ma nell’area di Nairobi. La situazione sanitaria è ancora sotto controllo, ma quella economica ha già reso difficile la vita di milioni di persone. Marta, la coordinatrice dei volontari, ci racconta cosa sta succedendo: “The situation in Kenya is very mixed. The number of COVID infections in Kenya are around 100-150 per day and up to 3,700 with 101 deaths. The numbers are low compared to Italy or Spain, but we know the potential for chaos here is much higher.
All projects are either on hold or closed for visits at the moment. We don’t have any volunteers. We have been running fundraisers in order to provide basic needs to children’shome partner. Nairobi greater area is locked in, and we have a curfew of 9pm to 4am every day. No meeting of more than 15 people is allowed and schools will go back into session on 1st of September, but we don’t have details of that yet. It looks like they will stagger the reintroduction of classes little by little.”
Le conseguenze del COVID-19 in Kenya:
In Kenya sono emerse gravi difficoltà economiche per tutta la popolazione. Marta ci ha chiarito meglio la situazione: “There is a huge economic recession in Kenya. Informal jobs lost left, right and center and the whole tourism industry on pause – we see tour vans doing things like loading vegetables and selling then on the side of the road. Some restaurants have reopened, but the normal middle-class people can’t afford to go out anymore! Countries like Kenya will suffer the financial recession deeper and for longer. There are zero unemployment helps. The government has put money aside for relief but honestly, none of my projects or vulnerable families have seen or heard of anyone that has seen them. We are full of challenges. People are hungry and jobless and it’s so hard to think about sustainable living under such circumstances. I feel like I’m personally always working – either trying to make money for my family or trying to help someone else, and helping these days is harder because of social distancing rules. I feel locals are not really believing that COVID is real and they don’t distance themselves unless there is a big reason to (for example they get
beaten up by police)”
